QANTAS to go “trayless” for international economy meals

Nov 04, 2014 No Comments by

QANTAS is set to change its Economy meal delivery on international services. The new product to be dubbed “New Economy” will remove the traditional tray and become “trayless”. This new move, which is designed to reduce catering centre handling costs, will allow the carrier to invest in the actual meal product thereby offering meal options up to fifty percent larger than current ones. The removal of trays also allows more meals to be stored in the carts used by cabin crew for service delivery.  The current product allows for 38 meals to be stored in the carts, whilst the new one will increase to 58 meals and up to 78 meals on Trans-Tasman services.

The carrier will also extend the “Select on Q – Eat” product to Economy Class, previously this was available in the airline’s Business and Premium Economy cabins. This product will allow passengers to select their preferred meal choice online prior to travelling.  ”New Economy” will launch later this year on flights from Australia to Dubai and London. It will be progressively launched on Trans-Tasman and to North and South America. Asian services are expected to have this service sometime in 2015.
